Peer Power Blog
This blog is about the power of peers in the IT space. It is designed as a place to share things I have learned the past 24+ years running a business as well as meeting the growing demands of business owners we experience leading the Heartland Tech Groups - a peer group network for IT business owners.

HTG Shines
Hurricane Sandy is starting to wind down and while there has been much damage, it seems most of the HTG members on the east coast have been spared for the most part. I sent out personal emails to our affected members, and received responses from over 40 of them yesterday. The good news is that while there are definitely some challenges with power and water and other inconveniences, overall the companies seem to be on their way to recovery. The feedback was positive and spirits were generally very good. A few were closed due to lack of power, or in some cases no phone service or Internet access. But in general it appears our members were spared to a large degree,...

Lessons from ANZ
I’ve been down here in Australia the past week now. It has been a whirlwind of a time as we have completed one SWOT, three peer group meetings and participated in the ConnectWise user group. Lots of partner interaction and literally dozens of hours sharing content and participating in discussions and learning. As is usually the case, I am confident I have learned more from my participation than those I was supposed to lead and train. That is usually how it goes for me – the teacher gets taught and this trip has been filled with that kind of lessons thus far. One more week to go, so I may well have another blog to follow this one, but here are my initial lessons from down under in Q3 2012.

Tale of Two Companies
We are excited to announce that LabTech is supporting HTG as the sponsor for our upcoming Service Management Summit Webcast which will be happening live from the Heartland on August 16-17. The event will be broadcast live by Varvid. We have two days of great content focused on the people side of service management. LabTech and ConnectWise are great companies that have created fantastic tools, and they add much value to those of us who depend on them to operate our company day in and day out. But at the end of the day, it is people that really make service delivery happen. And these two companies (now three with Quosal) understand that reality and a...

Author Karl Palachuk to Host 3-Day Online Conference for Computer Consultants
Former HTG member and good friend Karl Palachuk has announced details for his 3-day online conference for computer consultants in June 2012. The conference will focus on building successful business processes and will feature some of the best business and technology speakers in the U.S. I have been asked to participate as a speaker for this event, and will be doing so on the third day – June 28.
The online conference – Managing for Success 2012 – is the first event of its kind targeting technology providers and computer consultants. The conference registration and information site is at www.smbonlineconference.com.
“We have a great line-up of speakers,” said Palachuk, “Including several i...

The Return of HTG Online - Q2 2012
At our recent HTGALL Q4 meetings in Orlando we announced the return of HTG Online. This program existed from 2006 – 2008 as an option for smaller VARs and MSPs to participate in an HTG like experience without the cost of quarterly travel. We understand that for a small company, not only is the blocker to participation the out of pocket dollars, it is also the lost billing opportunities because you are out of the field. During our previous HTG Online program, Microsoft had underwritten a significant portion of the cost. When the economy tanked that year, they completely cut off funding and we ended the program after two years.
I personally have always had a heart for the small guy. In f...
