Peer Power Blog
This blog is about the power of peers in the IT space. It is designed as a place to share things I have learned the past 24+ years running a business as well as meeting the growing demands of business owners we experience leading the Heartland Tech Groups - a peer group network for IT business owners.

Thoughts From HTG Summit 2013
On the plane ride home from Dallas, our team was talking and spending some time doing an informal debrief of our week together at the 2013 HTG Summit. I thought it would be good to review some of the great events and activities of the week we just experienced. So over the next few posts, I'll summarize the view from where I sit.
If I could sum up the feeling behind many of our shared observations and comments it would be two-fold: Proud and Thankful. I leave the week feeling proud of our team and how they are choosing to lead through change, proud of so many of you and how you are engaging, and profoundly humbled and thankful to be a part of the HTG journey together.
I spent tim...

Is Growth in Your Future?
As we move into the final month of 2012, I wanted to challenge you with some thoughts around growth. There are a lot of misconceptions around growth in general. That is most true when the supporting structure and team is not prepared for growth. When the fundamentals of an organization, or the people who are to step up and lead it are not prepared – well growth can be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. You have to make the right investments in getting the company focused on the right things, and invest in the skillset of the ...

Improving Team Performance
I recently read a blog post from Kevin Graff, a great speaker and coach. He was talking about 6 great tips to improve your team’s performance. This goes along with the Organizational Health focus we have in the crosshairs for HTG. It is important that we focus on getting our company’s healthy. And that means really one thing, and only one thing – that we focus on the people. You see, companies are made up of people. Nothing more, nothing less. Without them, there is no company. Without them, we won’t have to worry about organizational health because there will be no organization.
As we prepare to move into 2013, it is important that we begin to understand the keys that help us get healthy. ...

You Might Not Be a Leader
I'm sure everyone has heard Jeff Foxworthy's famous line: "you might be a redneck". He has created a business talking about things that define those who fall into that camp. As I've listened to speakers on leadership this past year, I've been collecting a series of things that have been shared around what separates those who lead from those who can't, won't or don't.
I hope you enjoy the list, but more importantly, you seriously ask yourself the question "Am I really a leader"? There are a lot of people who believe they are leaders, but fail one of the two litmus tests:
- Is anyone following? Leaders have followers!
- Who have you invested into in order ...

HTG Shines
Hurricane Sandy is starting to wind down and while there has been much damage, it seems most of the HTG members on the east coast have been spared for the most part. I sent out personal emails to our affected members, and received responses from over 40 of them yesterday. The good news is that while there are definitely some challenges with power and water and other inconveniences, overall the companies seem to be on their way to recovery. The feedback was positive and spirits were generally very good. A few were closed due to lack of power, or in some cases no phone service or Internet access. But in general it appears our members were spared to a large degree,...
