I’ve been writing a series of blog posts about things I learned this fall sitting on the combine seat taking out corn and soybeans. It’s amazing how much those lessons apply to running a small business. The principles of farming are the same as those of being a business owner. In this blog post, I want to talk about the reality that if we do what we did last year, we won’t get an improvement in yields. And if we do what we did last year in our businesses, we won’t get significantly better results. In all likelihood we’ll get exactly what we got last year, or maybe a little less. That is the reality of doing the same thing over and over. The ... Continue reading
A lot of people think that growing a crop is pretty simple. Just stick some seeds in the ground and sometime soon you’ll have a harvest. It really doesn’t work that way. I remember a conversation with a friend from Seattle who was going to grow corn in his garden for the first time. He asked how many ears he should expect per seed he planted thinking he was going to get 4-6 per stalk. Typically we get one ear per stalk, and once in a while a second one. But never more than that – at least that amount to anything at all. I suggested he do a little reading on what growing corn is like. He planned to plant a small handful of seeds and feed... One of the most important things in life is gratitude. We spend far too much of our time focused on what we wish we had (which we truly don’t need and often when we get it no longer even want) and far too little time being grateful for all the blessings that we’ve been given. I remember vividly when as a young boy, one of the men in my church shared life one Sunday evening on this topic. He had a couple props along to tell his story. He began with a bushel basket and said that was typically how we looked at life – as a big basket that contained all the things we would like God and others to give us. There are many good things we seek and desire, but it also is f... Continue reading
To think that harvest happens because of a few seeds we placed in the ground six months earlier is an amazing example of life and what HTG is all about. As a community we’ve been planting seeds for a number of years in our peer groups, and we’re seeing more and more evidence of a harvest as the days go by. That’s what I’d like to focus on this month and continue to write about in the blog as there are so many lessons to reflect on from my time in the combine. Here is the second lesson I learned from the combine seat. LESSON #2: The Greater the Obstacle, the More Glory in Overcoming It Driving across the fields this fall, I can see the impact of the farm team throughout the ... Continue reading
